Maria Maria - Santana Feat. Product G&B / 1999

Maria Maria는 산타나(Santana)가 1999년 발표한 <Supernatural>에 수록한 곡으로 US 10주1위, 연말결산3위, 2000년대 결산 14위, 역대 결산 122위, 캐나다 1위, UK 6위, 아일랜드 21위 등을 기록했다. 2000년 그래미 팝 보컬 퍼포먼스 부문을 수상했다. 2017년 DJ 칼레드(DJ Khaled)가 Wild Thoughts에서 샘플링 했다. 

 

산타나의 리더 까를로스 산타나(Carlos Santana)를 비롯해 와클리프 장(Wyclef Jean) 등 6명이 작곡에 참여했고 프로듀서는 와클리프와 제리 듀플레시스(Jerry 'wonder' Duplessis)가 맡았다. 보컬은 프로덕트 G&B(Product G&B)가 맡았다. 이들은 신시어(Sincere, David McRae)와 머니 함(Money Harm, Marvin Moore-Hough)으로 이루어진 R&B 듀오로 와클리프의 레퓨지 캠프 소속이다. 이들이 이 곡에 참여한 것은 와클리프가 아리스타 사장 클라이브 데이비스(Clive Davis)를 잘 설득했기 때문이다. 이후 이들은 산타나의 레이블과 계약하고 첫 앨범 <Ghetto And Blues>를 만들었으나 회사 여건상 발매되진 않았다. 이 앨범에는 산타나가 참여한 Dirty Dancin'이 있다.

 

가사는 빈민촌에서 고군분투하는 마리아라는 여인을 통해 빈민촌의 어려움을 알리고 신에게 거기서 벗어나게 해달라고 이야기는 내용인 것 같다. 화자는 마리아가 뮤지컬 <웨스트사이드 스토리(Westside Story)>에 출연하는 같은 이름의 주인공을 떠올라게 한다고 말한다. “Ahora vengo mama chola”에서 ‘마마 촐라’는 쿠바에서 발생한 팔로마욤베교의 여신이름이다. 까를로스는 이 곡이 히트한 후 마리아 마리아라는 음식점을 개업해 5곳의 지점을 두었다.
