Toy Soliders - 마티카 Martika / 1988

Toy Soldiers는 쿠바계 US 가수이자 배우인 마티카(Martika, Marta Marrero, 19690518)가 1988년 셀프 스튜디오 앨범에 수록한 곡으로 US 1위, 연말결산 29위, 아일랜드 3위, 캐나다 4위, UK 5위 등을 기록했다. 에미넴(Eminem)이 Like Toy Soldiers에서 샘플링 했다. 

 

마티카와 US 싱어송라이터 마이클 제이(Michael Jay)가 만들고 마이클이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 아이들의 목소리는 동요 Ring Around The Rosie에서 영향을 받았고 실제로 순수한  느낌을 배가 시키기 위해 마티카가 출연했던 TV 프로그램 <Kids Incorporated>의 출연진들을 섭외했다. 여기에는13세의 퍼기(Fergie)와 9세의 제니퍼 러브 휴이트(Jennifer Love Hewitt)가 있다. 뮤직비디오는 짐 셰이(JIm Shea)가 감독을 맡았다. 

 

가사는 마약을 하며 무너져가는 친구에게서 영감을 얻었고 그 친구를 화자로 해서 자신이 마약하는 걸 보는 3자의 입장에서 쓴 것으로 보인다. 장난감 병정은 마약이라는 거대한 힘에 조종당하며 스스로 통제력을 잃고 하나둘씩 쓰러지는 중독자들을 상징한다. 마티카는 AP와의 인터뷰에서 "가벼운 곡들만 두 곡 만들어봐서 다른 걸 써보고 싶었어요. 망설여졌지만 제가 말하기 무서웠던 주제에 대해 용기를 내봤죠. 마이클에게 마약에 대해 쓰고 싶다고 말했어요. 그리고 했죠"라고 말했다. VH-1의 <Pop-Up Video> 등 다수의 매체에 따르면 노래의 주인공인 친구는 이 노래에 용기를 얻었고 후에는 마약에서 완전히 탈출했다고 한다.
