Tragedy - 비지스 Bee Gees / 1979

Tragedy는 오스트레일리아 형제 밴드 비지스(Bee Gees)가 1979년 발표한 15번째 스튜디오 앨범 < Spirits Having Flown>에 수록한 곡으로 US 1위, 연말결산 16위, 연대결산 89위, UK, 아일랜드, 캐나다 모두 1위를 차지했다. 비지스의 6연속 1위 곡 중 다섯 번째다. 1998년 스텝스(The Steps)가 커버했다. 

 

배리 깁(Barry Gibb, 19460901), 로빈 깁(Robin Gibb, 19421222 ~ 20120520), 모리스 깁(Maurice Gibb, 19491222 ~ 20030112)이 만들고 비지스와 알비 갈루텐(Albhy Galuten), 칼 리처드슨(Karl Richardson)이 공동 프로듀서를 맡았다. 비지스 형제들은 당시 창작력에 불을 뿜고 있었는데, 같은 날 오후에 Too Much Heaven과 이 곡을 만들었고 저녁에는 Shadow Dancing을 만들어 모두 US 1위에 올랐다. 

 

후반부부터 끝날 때까지 폭발 소리가 세 번들린다. 이는 배리가 녹음 도중 제안한 것이다. 배리는 시범을 보이기 위해 두 손을 모으고 마이크에 굉음소리를 냈고 이 시도가 채택되었다. 제작진은 배리의 소리를 믹싱을 통해 깔끔한 폭발 소리로 만들었다. 칼은 알부미즘과의 인터뷰에서 "당시 박스로 된 새로 나온 프로덕트 제너레이터라고 있었는데, 우린 샘플을 받았던 것 같아요. 그 기기에 배리의 목소리와 최대한 많은 키를 잡은 피아노 소리를 넣어서 섞었죠. 그리고 뽑아냈더니 다이너마이트 같은 소리가 나왔어요. 이전까지 아무도 내지 못했던 소리죠"라고 말했다. 비지스는 1979년 BBC 특집방송에서 당시 상황을 그대로 재현하는 시간을 가졌다. 폭발소리는 화자의 절망적인 마음 상태를, "loving you"에서 길게 끄는 부분은 화자의 다급한 마음을 잘 표현한 사이렌 소리 같다는 평가를 받았다. 뒷부분 앨런 켄달(Alan Kendall)의 기타도 정말 좋다. 비지스 노래 중 가장 저평가된 노래란 생각이 든다. 

 

가사는 단순하게 연인이 떠나서 힘든 상황을 표현한 것일 수도 있고 연인이 떠난 후에 화자가 알아서 어떤 일을 하다가 잘 풀리지 않자 떠나간 연인을 다시 찾는 것일 수도 있다.
