Matilda – Harry Belafonte / 1953

Matilda는 해리 벨라폰테(Harry Belafonte)가 1953년 발표한 곡으로 미국을 비롯한 여러 나라에서 폭발적인 인기를 누렸고 국내에서도 많은 사랑을 받았다. 공연장에서 청중들과 주고받는 곡이라 무려 12분짜리 버전도 있다. 

해리 토마스(Harry Thomas)가 만들었고 칼립소의 선구자로 불리는 킹 라디오(King Radio, Norman Span)이 1930년대에 처음 녹음했다. 가사는 속이 많이 탈만한 내용인데 이런 식으로 신나게 부르고 나면 그 억울한 느낌이 좀 해소가 될 듯도 싶다. 돈을 날렸다는 분위기 때문인지 김정구의 왕서방 연서가 생각난다.
