Keep On Singing – Helen Reddy / 1974

Keep On Singing은 헬렌 레디(Helen Reddy)가 1974년 발표한 <Love Song For Jeffrey>에 수록한 곡으로 캐나다 10위, US 15위에 올랐고 양국의 AC 1위를 기록했다. 오스틴 로버츠(Austin Roberts)가 1973년 처음 발표해 US 50위까지 올랐다. 

 

대니 얀센(Danny Janssen)과 바비 하트(Bobby Hart)가 만들고 톰 캐탤래노(Tom Catalano)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 

오스틴의 버전이 과거에 대한 슬픔이 배어 있다면 헬렌의 버전은 그런 감정을 배제하고 씩씩하고 쾌활하게 성장한 화자의 느낌을 준다.

I don't remember mama, she died when I was born

엄마가 생각나지 않아, 엄마는 내가 태어날 때 돌아가셨지

We lived in a one room shanty but daddy tried to make it a home

우린 방 하나짜라 판잣집에서 살았지만 아빠는 가정을 위해 애 쓰셨어 

When I was only six years old I started singing in the streets

6살 때 길거리에서 처음 노래 부르기 시작했어

People would throw me pennies so I could daddy make ends meet

사람들이 적선을 해서 아빠의 수지타산이 맞게 해 드렸어

이 마을 저 마을 음악이 퍼지도록 만들어, 이 구식 세상엔 노래가 많지 않단다

So spread your song around

그러니 네 음악이 곳곳에 퍼지게 해

by the time I was 10 years old I had a rock n roll band

10살 때 록큰롤 밴드를 결성했어

Daddy's eyes were growing dim but I didn't understand

아빠의 눈은 눈물로 흐려졌지만 난 이해를 못했지

He said he would he so proud of me each time he'd hear us play

아빠는 내 노래를 들을 때마다 내가 자랑스럽다고 말씀하셨어

At night he'd pull me to his side and daddy would always say

밤마다 날 옆에 두곤 항상 말씀하셨지
