Changes - 2Pac Feat. Talent / 1998

Changes는 US 래퍼 투팍(2Pac, Tupac Amaru Shakur, Lesane Parish Crooks, 19710616 ~ 19960913)이 1998년 발표한 <Greatest Hits>에 수록한 곡으로 UK 3위, 아일랜드 5위, 캐나다 19위, US 32위 등을 기록했다. 그래미 랩 퍼포먼스 부문 후보에 올랐으나 에미넴(Eminem)의 My Name Is가 받았다. 나스(Nas)가 Black President에서 샘플링 했고 폴로지(Polo G)가 Wishing For A Hero에서 사용했다. 

 

투팍과 디온 에반스(Deon Evans, Big D The Impossible)가 만들고 디온이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 브루스 혼스비(Bruce Hornsby)의 1986년 곡 The Way It Is를 샘플링했고 탈렌트(Talent)라는 무명의 팀이 게스트 보컬로 참여했다. 뮤직비디오는 크리스 헤프너(Chris Hafner)가 감독을 맡았고 투팍의 이전 영상들과 미공개 사진들을 사용해 만들었다. MTV VMA 편집 부문 후보에 올랐으나 콘(Korn)의 Freak On A Leash가 받았다.

 

가사는 인종차별의 험난한 삶 속에서 변해야 할 흑인들의 삶과 백인(경찰)들의 부당한 공권력을 묘사하고 있다. "Huey"는 블랙팬서를 결성한 휴이 뉴튼(Huey P. Newton)을 가리킨다. 휴이는 1989년 47살의 나이에 마약상에게 총을 맞고 사망했다. 가사에는 2발이라고 나와 있으나 3발인 것으로 파악되었다. 화자는 어떤 건 변해도 어떤 건 절대 변하지 않을 수도 있다고 말하는 데, 아마 흑인들의 삶이 변하더라도 경찰의 태도는 변하지 않을 것 같다고 말하는 것 같다. 이는 2020년 "Black Lives Matter" 운동같은 것을 보면 정말 요원한 것 같다.
