왜 에릭 클랩튼의 별명은 슬로우핸드일까?

 

에릭 클랩튼(Eric Clapton)의 별명은 슬로우핸드(slowhand)다. 이 이유에 대해 국내에서 에릭을 소개하는 글들을 보면 ‘기타의 테크닉이 뛰어나서’라든가 ‘느린 블루스를 잘 쳐서’라든가 하는 이유들을 대고 있지만 이는 사실이 아니다. 에릭은 야드버즈(Yardbirds) 시절 속주기타리스트로 명성을 날렸다. 그래서 이 별명과는 특히 잘 어울리지 않는다.

 

이는 공연 중 에릭의 습관 때문에 생긴 것이다. 대개 공연 중에 기타가 망가지거나 기타를 바꿀 때 이미 튜닝이 다 된 기타를 매니저가 들고 오거나 공연 전에 뮤지션이 세팅을 미리 다 해놓고 바꾸는 경우가 대부분이지만 에릭은 그렇게 하지 않고 매니저가 새 기타를 가져오면 관객들을 앞에 두고 그 자리에서 튜닝을 시작하고 연습곡을 친다. 이 시간이 길어질 때도 있는데 그러면 관객들은 박수를 친다. 이 박수를 흔히 ‘느린 박수(slow clap)’라고 한다. 이는 뮤지션에게 힘을 주는 박수가 아니라 지겨우니 빨리 끝내라는 의미의 박수다.

 

이 느린 박수는 에릭이 공연에서 흔히 연출되는 광경이다. 에릭의 공식 자서전 저술가인 레이 콜먼(Ray Coleman)이 1985년 내놓은 <Coleman, Ray: Survivor! The Authorised Biography Of Eric Clapton (Sidwick & Jackson / 1985 UK)>에 보면 이 말은 야드버즈 시절의 매니저 조르지오 고멜스키(Giorgio Gomelsky)가 지었다고 나와 있다. 그는 말장난으로 ‘느린 박수’란 말을 사용해 (일종의 반어법 비슷하게) 빠른 연주자인 그의 별명을 만들었다고 에릭은 밝히고 있다.

 

원문은 다음과 같다. "My nickname of 'Slowhand' came from Giorgio Gomelsky. He coined it as a good pun. He kept saying I was a fast player, so he put together the slow handclap phrase into Slowhand as a play on words"

 

에릭은 이 별명을 사용한 스튜디오 앨범을 1977년 발표했다. 이 앨범에는 우리나라에서 많은 인기를 얻었고 당시 애인이던 패티 보이드(Pattie Boyd)를 위해 만들었던 Wonderful Tonight이 들어있다.
