A Certain Romance – Arctic Monkeys / 2006

A Certain Romance는 UK 인디 밴드 악틱 몽키즈(Arctic Monkeys)가 2006년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not>에 수록한 곡으로 NME 선정 2000년대 최고의 노래 10위를 차지했다.

 

팀에서 리드보컬과 리드기타를 맡고 있는 알렉스 터너(Alex Turner)가 만들었고 짐 어비스(Jim Abbiss)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 가사는 화자가 제3자적 입장에서 자신의 동네 친구들을 바라보는 시선이다. 동네 친구들이 흔히 ‘chev’라 불리는 계층과 좀 겹치는 부분이 있는 것 같다. ‘chev’는 전형적으로 노동자계층이고 우리나라에서 츄리닝이라고 부르는 아이다스, 리복 등의 트랙수트를 입고 다니며 예사로 폭력을 휘두르기도 한다. 알렉스는 그런 것들도 맘에 안 들긴 하지만 이 친구들의 라이프 스타일이니 참견할 수는 없고 그보다는 로맨스(내 생각엔 열정)가 없는 것이 문제라고 한탄한다.

 

우리나라도 마찬가지고 어디에서나 그런 갈등은 있는 것 같다. 관성적으로 과거의 것을 고수하고 비판 없이 그것만 좋다고 생각하는 사람들과 살았던 사람이라면. 그래서 더 이상 생각이 같지 않으므로 “keep rolling”하는 건 힘들겠지. 가끔 어린 시절을 추억하는 잠깐 동안의 자리라면 모를까 대화를 나누다보면 금방 날 선 대립이 생기곤 한다.

 

“they'd probably like to throw a punch at me”나 “kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands”, “broken bones” 등은 ‘chev’의 폭력적인 성향을 보여주는 대목인 것 같다. 그래서 말로 설득하기도 힘들도 그렇다고 똑같이 할 수도 없다고 말하는 듯.

우린 계속 같이 놀아야 할까?

뭐 그 애들은 클래식 리복 혹은 오래된 컨버스를 신거나 양말 안에 츄리닝 바지 밑을 넣기도 해

핵심은 로맨스가 없다는 거지

저쪽에 부서진 뼈가 있으니까, 음악이라곤 새로운 벨소리만 있어

여기가 좀 다르다는 걸 아는 데는 셜록 홈즈도 필요 없어

Don't get me wrong though

오해는 마 (다 그렇다는 건 아니야) 

There's boys in bands and kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands

밴드 하는 애들도 있고 손에 당구대를 쥐고 싸우길 좋아하는 애들도 있어

And just 'cause he's had a couple of cans, he thinks it's alright to act like a dickhead

그리고 몇 개의 캔을 마셨다는 이유로 멍청하게 행동해도 좋다고 생각하는 애들이 있을 뿐이지
