Mississippi Boweevil Blues - Charley Patton / 1929

Mississippi Boweevil Blues는 델타 블루스의 아버지로 불리는 US 블루스 뮤지션 찰리 패튼(Charley Patton, 18910401 ~ 19340428)이 1929년 발표한 곡이다. 1961년 US 가수 브룩 벤튼(Brook Benton)이 리메이크 해 US 2위에 올랐다.  

 

찰리가 1908년 쯤 만든 것으로 추정된다. 블루스의 어머니로 불리는 US 블루스 가수 마 레이니(Ma Rainey) 1923년 처음 녹음했고 1034년 리드 벨리(Lead Belly)가 자신의 버전을 발표하는 등 다양한 가사와 버전이 있다. 

 

가사는 US 남부에 뿌리내린 목화바구미(딱정벌레목에 속하는 대부분 주둥이가 긴 곤충)가 목화농장을 초토화시키고 피해를 입은 농부들이 어떻게 새로운 정착지를 찾아 이주하는 지에 대한 내용을 다루고 있다.
