Whoomp! (There It Is) - Tag Team / 1993

Whoomp! (There It Is)는 US 마이애미 기반의 듀오 태크 팀(Tag Team)이 1993년 발표한 데뷔 앨범의 타이틀곡으로 토니 브랙스톤(Toni Braxton)의 Un-Break My Heart에 막혀 주간 1위에 오르지는 못했으나 US 2위, 연말결산 2위, 1990년대 결산 15위, 역대결산 74위(2018년 기준), UK 34위 등을 기록했다. VH1 선정 ‘1990년대 최고의 원 히트 원더’ 97위에 올랐다.

 

배리 소넨필드(Barry Sonnenfeld) 감독의 1993년 영화 <Addams Family Values>에 Addams Family (Whoomp!)란 제목으로 리메이크해서 사용했고 이듬해에는 Whoomp! (There It Goed)라는 제목의 디즈니 버전을 만들었다. 국내 3인조 힙합 그룹 DJ DOC가 1994년 발표한 슈퍼맨의 비애에서 “슈퍼맨”하는 부분은 이 곡의 후렴을 레퍼런스 한 것으로 보인다.

 

두 명의 멤버인 DC 더 브레인 슈프림(DC The Brain Supreme, Cecil Glenn), 스티브 롤른(Steve Rolln, Steve Gibson)이 만들고 프로듀서도 함께 맡았다. 뮤직비디오는 US 애틀랜타에서 촬영했고 대규모 야외 파티로 기획했다. 이탈리아 디스코 그룹 카노(Kano)의 1980년 곡인 I’m Ready를 샘플링 했고 후렴은 이들보다 한 달 전에 발표한 같은 마이애미 출신의 95 사우스(95 South)가 발표한 Whoot, There It Is와 멜로디가 똑같다. 두 팀 사이에는 아직도 원작에 대한 논쟁이 오가고 있다.

 

“whoomp, there it is”는 흔히 지나가는 예쁜 여자를 보고 “야, 저기 좀 봐”라고 말하는, 아프로-아메리칸 남자들끼리의 속어다. 태사자의 도에 나오는 “태사자 in the house”는 이 곡의 가사에서 가져온 것으로 보인다. 가사에 등장하는대로 이들의 후속곡은 U Go Girl이였으나 차트인하지 못했다.
