Three Little Fishes - Kay Kyser / 1939

 

Three Little Fishes (Itty Bitty Boo)는 US 밴드리더 케이 카이저(Kay Kyser, 19050618 ~ 19850723)가 1939년 발표한 곡으로 당시 US 1위를 차지할 정도로 큰 인기를 얻었다.

 

조세핀 캐링어(Josephine Carringer)와 버니스 아이딘스(Bernice Idins)가 작사하고 색시 도웰(Saxie "Horace" Dowell)이 작곡했다. 케이의 악단이 연주하고 지니 심즈(Ginny Simms), 설리 메이슨(Sully Mason), 해리 배빗(Harry Babbitt) 등이 보컬을 맡았다. 

 

이와같은 곡을 노벨티(노블티, 나블티, novelty song)이라고 부른다. 이는 희한하거나, 이상한, 혹은 창의적이고 기발한 느낌으로 히트한 곡을 가리키는 말이다. 요즘의 밈(meme)과 일맥상통하는 부분이 있는 것 같다. 그래서 그런지 셀 수 없이 많은 가수들이 커버했다. 

 

가사는 길을 잃으니 가까운 데서 헤엄치라는 엄마의 명령을 무시하고 댐을 넘어 바다로 헤엄쳐 나간 세마리의 작은 물고기들이 상어를 만나고 다시 집으로 돌아오는 이야기를 담고 있다. 물고기는 상어가 고래인 줄 안다. 다행히 무사히 집으로 돌아오고 진기한 경험도 해서 잘 마무리된 이야기이지만, 부모의 입장에서나 아이의 입장에서 모두 할 말이 있을 것같다.

풀밭의 작은 풀장에서 
Swam three little fishies and a mama fishie too

작은 물고기 세마리와 엄마 물고기도 수영을 했어
"Swim" said the mama fishie, "Swim if you can"

"수영해라" 엄마 물고기는 말했어 "할수 있대로 수영해봐"

세마리 작은 물고기들은 마구잡이로 나아갔지

"위!" 세마리 작은 물고기들은 소리를 질렀어 "여기 아주 재밌다

그들은 수영하고 또 수영했어. 유쾌했지

"도와줘요!" 세마리 작은 물고기들은 울부짖었어 "저 모든 고래들을 봐!"

할수 있는 한 빠르게 그들은 방향을 돌렸어 
And back to the pool in the meadow they swam

그리고 그들이 수영했던 풀옆의 풀장으로 돌아갔지
