Celebration - Kool & The Gang / 1980

Celebration은 쿨 & 더 갱(Kool & The Gang)이 1980년 발표한 12번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Celebrate!>에 수록한 곡으로 US 1위, 댄스 1위, R&B 1위, 연말결산 6위, 캐나다 1위, UK 7위, 아일랜드 17위 등을 기록했다. 1992년 카일리 미노그(Kylie Minogue)가 커버했다.

 

멤버들이 함께 만들며 프로듀서도 맡았고 유미르 데오다토(Eumir Deodato)가 공동 프로듀서로 참여했다. 백업보컬에 걸 그룹 섬씽 스윗(Something Sweet)이 참여했다. 팀의 색소폰 연주자 로날드 벨(Ronald Bell, Khalis Bayyan)은 빌보드와의 인터뷰에서 “처음의 아이디어는 코란을 읽다가 나왔어요. 하느님이 아담을 만들 때 천사들이 축하하고 노래를 부르는 대목이요. 기본적인 코드와 ”Everyone around the world, come on, let's celebrate" 부분을 만들었어요. 마지막 부분은 Ladies Night의 ‘Come on, let's all celebrate’를 이용 했어요“라고 말했다. 디스코 이후에 이전의 딥 훵크보다는 다소 팝 훵크로 분위기를 전향한 곡으로 평가받고 있다.

 

가사에 특정한 사항이 들어있지 않아 생일, 결혼, 기념일, 축하행사, 스포츠, 좋은 일이 생겨서 이벤트를 할 때 등 축하할 만한 모든 상황에 어울린다. 그 때문인지 아마도 US에서 최장수 축하곡으로 사랑을 받고 있다. 1981년 이란에서 US인 인질이 구출되었을 때와 넬슨 만델라(Nelson Mandela)가 대통령 후보로 나왔을 때에도 사용되었다. 리드 보컬을 맡고 있는 제임스 테일러(James Taylor, J.T.)는 빌보드와의 인터뷰에서 “모두가 다 어느 정도 히트할 거라고 생각했어요. 저의 어머니는 평생 이 곡을 부를 테니 준비하라고 말씀 하셨죠”라고 말했다.
