Morning Train - Sheena Easton / 1980

Morning Train (9 To 5)는 쉬나 이스턴(Sheena Easton)이 1980년 발표한 곡으로 이듬해 내놓은 데뷔 앨범 <Take My Time>에 수록했다. 미국과 캐나다 1위, 아일랜드 2위, 영국 3위, 영국 연말결산 9위, 미국 연말결산 12위 등을 기록했다. 드니 빌뇌브(Denis Villeneve) 감독의 2016년 영화 <컨택트(Arrival)>에서 UFO가 나타난 12개의 지역을 분석하는 중에 이 곡으로 보이는 곡이 히트한 지역에서 나타났다고 분석하는 장면이 있다. 

 

플로리 파머(Florrie Palmer)가 만들고 크리스토퍼 닐(Christopher Neil)이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 원래 제목이 “9 To 5”였으나 돌리 파튼(Dolly Parton)의 곡과 혼동을 피하기 위해 바꿨다. 뮤직비디오는 영국 동 서섹스와 서 서섹스 사이에 있는 블루벨 철도회사에서 촬영했다.

 

가사는 화자(아마도 전업주부)가 하루 종일 회사에 갔다 오는 남편을 기다렸다가 행복한 사랑의 시간을 갖는 이야기를 담고 있다. 잠시 떨어져 있기에 그 시간이 더욱 소중할지도 모르겠다. 당시 20살의 그리고 조만간 엄청난 수퍼스타가 되는 쉬나가 부르기에는 적절하지 않았던 것으로 보이지만 당시에는 남자가 회사에 가고 (아기가 없을 경우에) 여자가 집에서 하루 종일 남자를 기다리는 가정이 많았기에 이 곡이 크게 히트한 것으로 보인다. 같은 제목인데 돌리의 노래와 정반대의 이야기를 담고 있는 게 재밌다.
