Witch Doctor - David Seville / 1958

Witch Doctor는 데이빗 세빌(David Seville, Rostom Sipan "Ross" Bagdasarian 19190127 ~ 19720116)이 1958년 발표한 곡으로 US 3주간 1위, R&B 1위, 연말결산 4위 등을 기록했다.

 

데이빗이 만들고 프로듀서도 맡았다. 1961년 칩멍크라는 캐릭터로 처음 드라마를 만든 TV 애니메이션 <The Alvin Show>에 사용되었다. 느린 녹음기에 녹음해 정상속도로 돌렸을 때 빨라진 효과를 이용한 첫 번째 곡이다. 데이빗은 그렇게 해서 세 명의 캐릭터를 만들었고 연말에 The Chimpmunks란 곡으로 폭발적인 인기를 누리며 드라마 제작에 다가섰다.

 

사랑이 뜻대로 되지 않는 화자가 마법사를 찾아가 사랑을 얻는 방법에 대해 묻고 처방을 받는 내용이다. 마법사는 무슨 말인지 모를 주문 같은 것을 처방하고 화자는 그 처방에 자신감을 얻은 것 같다.
