Fortunate - Maxwell / 1999

Fortunate은 US 싱어 송 라이터 맥스웰(Gerald Maxwell Rivera)이 테드 댐(Ted Demme) 감독의 영화 <Life> O.S.T.에 수록한 곡으로 US 4위, R&B 1위, 연말결산 24위 등을 기록했다. 그래미 R&B 퍼포먼스 부문 후보에 올랐으나 배리 화이트(Barry White)의 Staying Power가 받았다. 

 

알 켈리(R. Kelly)가 만들고 프로듀서도 맡았다. 알은 “맥스웰은 이 곡을 부르기 싫어했어요. 대신에 케이시 & 조조(K-Ci & Jojo)의 Life를 부르고 싶어했죠. 하지만 네오소울 가수가 부르기에는 화자가 (영화상에서) 죄수여서 너무나 어울리는 것 같지가 않아 제가 반대했어요”라고 말했다.

 

가사는 화자 자신이 사랑하는 연인을 자신이 지금껏 경험해본 최고의 것들보다도 더 최고라고 표현하는 내용이다. 이적의 다행이다 가사는 "fortunate to have you" 이 한 문장에서 영감을 얻는 게 아닌가 싶다.
