Don’t Let The Rain Come Down – The Serendipity Singers / 1964

Don't Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man)은 미국 혼성 포크 그룹 세렌디피티 싱어즈(The Serendipity Signers)가 1964년 발표한 곡으로 미국 6위에 올랐다. 국내에서 정시스터즈가 비여 오지 말아다오로 번안해 불렀다.

 

이 곡은 영국의 전승 동요 There Was A Crooked Man을 차용해 만든 것이다. 밥 보우어스(Bob Bowers), 브라이언 세네트(Bryan Sennett), 존 매든(John Madden)이 편곡을 맡았다.

 

전승동요에 의하면 구부러진 사람은 스코틀랜드 장군인 알렉산더 레슬리(Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven, 1582~1661)를 가리킨다. 알렉산더는 스코틀랜드의 종교와 정치적 자유를 보장했는데 영국에선 국교회를 강요하고 있어 그 당시 영국과 스코틀랜드 간에 정치적으로 불안했던 상황을 표현하고 있는 듯하다. 여기서 6펜스는 영국의 왕 찰스 1세(King Charles I of England 1600~1649)을 가리킨다고 한다. 찰스 1세는 종교의 자유를 인정하지 않고 스코틀랜드인들에게 영국 국교회를 강요해 결국 두 민족 사이에서는 전투가 벌어진다. 굳이 이런 역사적 사실이 아니더라도 미봉책인 상황으로는 결코 어떤 것도 제대로 해결 할 수 없다는 교훈을 주려는 것으로 보인다.
