The Load-Out/Stay – Jackson Browne / 1977

The Load-Out은 잭슨 브라운(Jackson Browne)이 1977년 발표한 라이브 앨범 <Running On Empty>에 수록한 곡이다. 앨범에서 다음곡인 모리스 윌리암스(Maurice Williams)의 곡을 커버한 Stay와 이어진다. 미국의 많은 라디오 프로그램에서 두 곡을 메들리로 틀어 싱글에 “Stay”라는 태그가 함께 붙어 판매되었다. Stay가 20위까지 올라서 이 곡도 20위까지 오른 것으로 치는 것 같다.

 

잭슨과 브라이언 가로팔로(Bryan Garofalo)가 만들고 잭슨이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 가사는 공연을 함께 하는 스태프, 로드 매니저, 관객들에 대한 트리뷰트의 의미를 담고 있다. <The Pretender> 앨범 공연 중 메릴랜드 콜롬비아의 메리웨더 포스트 파빌롱에서 공연한 것을 녹음한 것으로 세 번째 앙코르가 나왔을 때 더 이상 부를 곡이 없어 이 곡을 불렀다. 잭슨은 편곡이 완성된 상태가 아니여서 망설였지만 드럼을 치는 러스 쿤켈(Russ Kunkel)이 "그냥 해보자"고 해서 잭슨이 자신의 밴드와 공연에서 처음으로 연주한 것이다. 

 

Stay는 기타를 치는 데이빗 린들리(David Lindley)와 백업 보컬을 맡은 로즈마리 버틀러(Rosemary Butler)가 함께 불렀다. 팔세토로 고음을 내는 건 데이빗이다.

마지막 기타를 싸고 나면 여전히 기타를 치고 싶어

밴드가 버스에 타 기다리고 있어

We've got to drive all night and do a show in Chicago or Detroit, I don't know

We do so many shows in a row and these towns all look the same

우린 한꺼번에 많은 공연을 해, 모든 도시가 똑같아 보이지

We just pass the time in our hotel rooms and wander 'round backstage

And we got Richard Pryor on the video

비디오에는 리처드 프라리어(코미디언)가 나와

We got time to think of the ones we love while the miles roll away

멀리 가면서 우리가 사랑하는 사람들을 생각할 시간도 있어

But the only time that seems too short is the time that we get to play
