Tha Crossroads – Bone Thugs-N-Harmony / 1996

Tha Crossroads는 미국 남성 힙합 그룹 본 턱스-앤-하모니(Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, 이하 BTH)가 1996년 발표한 <E. 1999 Eternal>에 수록한 곡으로 미국 1위, 아일랜드 6위, 영국 8위, 미국 연말결산 7위, 1990년대 결산 25위 등을 기록했다. 그래미 랩 퍼포먼스 그룹 부문을 수상했다. 2002년 영국 힙합 그룹 블레이징 스쿼드(Blazin' Squad)가 리메이크 해 영국 1위에 올랐다.

 

멤버들이 함께 만들었고 원래 버전은 Crossroads란 제목으로 토니 C(Tony C)가, 이후 추모하는 사람들을 늘리면서 리믹스 버전인 Tha Crossroads에는 DJ 유-닉(DJ U-Neek)이 프로듀서로 참여했다. 아이즐리 브라더즈(The Isley Brothers)의 Make Me Say It Again Girl을 샘플링 해 작곡 크레딧에는 무려 12명의 이름이 올라가 있다.

 

원래 버전은 이들의 친구 왈리 라이어드(Wally Laird III)만을 추모하는 곡이었다. 크레이지 본(Krayzie Bone)은 “왈리는 진정한 우리 팀원 이예요. 비록 그가 랩이나 노래는 하지 않지만 어렸을 때부터 같이 자랐고 항상 같이 있었기에 우린 그를 우리 팀원이라고 생각하고 있어요”라고 말했다. 하지만 1995년 이들의 친구이자 멘토인 이지-이(Easy-E)가 후천성 면역 결핍증(AIDS)로 사망하면서 추모하는 사람을 늘리고 원래 버전에서 샘플링 했던 조 델리아(Joe Delia)의 Bad Ending은 뺐다. 이지-이는 최초의 랩 그룹 N.W.A 출신으로 BTH를 발굴하고 키운 인물이다.

 

“C's Uncle Charlie”는 위시 본(Wish Bone)의 외삼촌이다. 위시는 2007년 클리블랜드 프리 타임즈와의 인터뷰에서 “찰리는 우릴 영화관에 데려다주고 우리 음악을 후원해 주었어요”라고 말했다. “Little Boo”는 BTH가 설립한 레이블 소속의 그룹 그레이브야드 쉬프트(The Graveyard Shift)의 창단멤버로 16살에 어린 조카 앞에서 살해당했다. 그는 조카를 품고 날아오는 총알 세례를 맞았다. 

뮤직비디오 초반부에는 3인조 여성 보컬 그룹 트레(Tre)가 참여해 전통영가인 Mary Don’t You Weep을 부른다.
