Sweet Violets - Dinah Shore / 1951

Sweet Violets은 디나 쇼어(Dinah Shore, Fannye Rose Shore, 19160229 ~ 19940224)가 1951년 발표한 곡으로 US 3위를 기록했다. 가사가 다르고 더 긴 버전들이 많이 있다.

 

버스와 후렴은 별개의 노래다. 버스 부분은 구전가요이고 후렴은 1882년 연극 <Fritz Among The Gypsies>에 사용된 조세프 에밋(Joseph Emmet)의 Sweet Violets을 가져왔고 제목도 그대로 사용했다. 헨리 르네(Henri René)가 지휘를 맡았고 헨리의 오케스트라가 연주했고 편곡은 사이 코벤(Cy Coben)과 찰스 그린(Charles Grean)이 맡았다.

가사는 사람을 잘못 만나 재산을 잃는 이야기인 것 같다. 후렴 전에 가사들, “raise lots of”, “nothing but”, “from a man is his” 다음에 나올 말을 일부러 뺀 라임(센서드 라임, 마인드 라임, 티징 라임이라고 부른다)을 사용하고 있다. 아마도 원래 들어갈 단어는 “money” 혹은 그와 비슷한 말일 텐데, 아마도 너무 노골적이라 뺀 것으로 보인다. 이런 라임이라고 생각하지 않고 그냥 가사를 연이어 들으면 "money"가 들어갈 자리에 "sweet violets"가 들어가는 것처럼 느껴진다. 김정구의 왕서방 연서 생각이 난다.

헛간 뒤에서

he gave her a lecture on horses and chickens and eggs

말과 닭, 계란 다루는 법을 알려줬어

And told her that she has such beautiful Manners

그리고 그녀에게 너무나 훌륭한 매너를 가지고 있다고 말했어

That suited a girl of her charms

여자가 매력과 잘 어울리는 매너를

A girl that he'd like for to take in his washing and ironing

그는 빨래를 하고 다림질 해줄 여자를 찾고 있었어

And then if she did, they could get married and raise lots of ..."

그래서 그녀가 그렇게 해준다면 결혼해 많은

The girl told the farmer that he'd better stop

그 여자는 농부에게 그만 하는 게 좋겠다고 말했어

And she told her father and called a taxi

그리고 아버지에게 말해 택시를 부르고

Which got there before very long

금방 그곳에 도착 했어

For someone was doing his little girl right for a change

누군가 그의 작은 딸을 제대로 바꿔주고 있기 때문에

And so here's what he said:

여기서 그가 한 말은 이래

"If you marry her, son, you're better off single

그녀와 결혼하려면, 이보게, 혼자 사는 게 나아

'Cause it's always been my belief

그게 내가 항상 믿어온 거야

Marriage will bring a man nothing but ..."

The farmer decided he'd wed anyway

그 농부는 암튼 결혼하기로 결정 했어

And started in planning for his wedding suit

그리고 결혼예복을 맞출 계획을 세웠어

which he'd purchased for only one buck

1달러에 구입할 계획을

But then he found out he was just out of money

하지만 그때 그는 돈이 거덜 났다는 걸 알았어

And so he got left in the lurch

그래서 그는 떨며 남겨졌어

Standing and waiting in front of the end of this story

이 이야기의 끝 앞에 서서 기다리며

Which just goes to show

다음을 보여주는 걸로 가는 이야기
