Messy - 롤라 영 Lola Young / 2024

Messy는 UK 싱어송라이터 롤라 영(Lola Young, 20010104)가 2024년 발표한 두 번째 스튜디오 앨범 <This Wasn't Meant For You Anyway>에 수록한 곡으로 아일랜드 2위, UK 3위, 캐나다 22위, US 25위 등을 기록했다. 틱톡, 쇼츠를 중심으로 바이럴 되어 크게 알려졌다.

 

롤라와 코너 디키슨(Conor Dickinson)이 만들고 솔로모노포닉(Solomonophonic), 마누카(Manuka), 몬순(Monsune), 카터 랭(Carter Lang) 등이 프로듀서를 맡았다.

 

가사는 자신의 엉망인 삶을 옹호하면서도 싫어하고 상대에게 화를 내다가도 잘보이고 싶은 다층적인 면을 담고 있는 것 같다. 자신의 행동 대한 합리화와 노력이 쉽지 않다는 것에 대한 힘겨움에서 오는 어떤 불편함 같은 게 느껴진다. 롤라가 메탈, 엣우드, BBC 라디오 등과의 인터뷰에서 한 말들을 정리해보면 "주의산만, 과잉행동, 충동성을 주 증상으로 보이는 만성질환인 주의력결핍 과잉행동장애(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD)를 겪고 있는 사람들에 대한 송가예요. 지난 관계에서의 모든 걸을 보여주죠. 무던히도 밸런스를 잡으려했던, 어느 날은 멀쩡했다가 어느 날은 엉망인, 저의 정신상태에 대한 노래이기도 하고요. 불완전한 나를 껴안으며 흠이 있건 없건 그 안에서 저의 힘을 찾으려는 것이기도 해요. 사랑하는 사람을 행복하게 해 줄 수 없다는 것에 대한 스스로에 대한 짜증 같은 것도 있고 좋지 않은 관계 속에 갇혀 있는 불안함 같은 것도 표출하고 있어요"라고 말했다.
