The Price - Twisted Sister / 1984

The Price는 US 헤비메탈 밴드 트위스티드 시스터(Twisted Sister)가 1984년 발표한 3번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Stay Hungry>에 수록한 곡으로 US 메인록 19위를 기록했다. <쾌걸 근육맨 2세(キン肉にくマンⅡ世)>의 한국판 주제가 질풍가도가 이 곡을 레퍼런스 했을 것이라는 추측이 많았다.

 

팀의 리더이자 보컬인 다니엘 스나이더(Daniel "Dee" Snider)가 만들고 톰 베르만(Tom Werman)이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 2집 앨범 중에 만들었으나 3집에 수록했다. 다니엘은 송팩츠와의 인터뷰에서 "아내, 아들과 떨어져 4개월간 집을 비웠어요. 전화비를 낼 형편도 되지 못했죠. 그만큼 밴드는 궁핍했어요. 그러던 어느날 전화가 와서 제가 받았는데, 기타를 치는 제이 제이 프렌치(Jay Jay French)의 처제였어요. 그(녀)는 제게 '어떻게 지내'라고 안부를 물었고 전 '글쎄, 기분이 아주 우울해. 수제트(Suzett)와 제시(Jesse)를 몇 달 동안 보지 못했어'라고 말했죠. 그랬더니 그(녀)가 '음, 내 생각엔 너희들이 지불해야 할 대가인 것 같아'라고 말했어요. 저는 제이 제이를 바꿔주고 휴대용 녹음기를 집었어요. 그리고 화장실로 가서 이 곡을 불렀죠. 내 안에서 곡의 멜로디 전체가 터져나와 위에서 아래로 쏟아져내렸어요. 그렇게 그때의 감정에 영감을 받아 이 곡을 만들었어요"라고 말했다. 

 

가사는 어떠한 성공을 성취하기 위해 치뤄야 할 대가에 대한 이야기인 것 같다. 그로 인해 인생 전체를 걸어 성공할 수 있다면 하겠는가, 욜로와 파이어족 중 어떤 것을 택할 것인가. 선택이 아니라 당위의 삶이 그렇다면 어떻게 버틸 것인가, 개인에 따라 잘 하는 것 & 하고 싶은 것 & 돈 많이 주는 것 중에서 어떤 걸 선택해야 할까 등을 논의할 수 있을 것 같다.
