The Glamorous Life - Sheila E. / 1984

The Glamorous Life는 US 가수이자 드러머 쉴라이(Sheila E, Sheila Cecilia Escovedo)가 1984년 발표한 앨범의 타이틀곡으로 캐나다 3위, US 7위, 댄스 1위, 연말결산 30위, UK 96위 등을 기록했다. 제네시스(Genesis)의 필 콜린즈(Phil Collins)는 이 곡의 스토리에 영감을 얻어 Invisible Touch를 만들었다. 

 

US 뮤지션 프린스(Prince Rogers Nelson 19580607 ~ 20160421)가 만들고 프린스와 쉴라이가 공동으로 프로듀서를 맡았다. 원래는 프린스가 기획한 아폴로니아 6(Apollonia 6) 앨범에 넣으려고 했었다. 페르 닐센(Per Nilsen)의 프린스 일대기 <Prince: A Documentary>에서 아포로니아 6의 리더 파트리시아 코테로(Patricia Kotero)는 "프린스는 항상 제게 농담을 하곤 했어요. '넌 여름에도 밍크 코트를 입고 다닐 애야'라고요. 아직까지 밍크 하나 없는데 말이죠. 그러더니 쉴라이가 나타나자 우리 곡을 빼앗아서 냅다 그(녀)에게 줘버렸어요"라고 말했다. 쉴라이에게 빠진 프린스는 앨범 전체의 프로듀서를 맡아 도와주고 다음 히트곡이자 쉴라이의 시그니처 곡인 A Love Bizarre까지 만들어 주었다. 

 

가사는 돈이면 남자까지도 살 수 있다고 맹신하는 돈의 신봉자가 진짜 사랑을 만나서 이 세상에는 다이아몬드와 모피, 자동차만 있는 게 아니라는, 새로운 깨달음을 얻는 내용인 것 같다.
