Hallelujah I'm A Bum - Harry McClintock / 1928

Hallelujah I'm A Bum은 US 만능 엔터테이너 해리 맥클린톡(Harry Kirby McClintock, 18841008 ~ 19570424)이 1928년 발표한 싱글이다. 국제 노동자 협회 행진가들 중 한 곡이다. 다수의 매체에서 뛰어난 저항가요 중의 한 곡으로 평가받고 있다.

UK 작곡가 존 허즈밴드(John Jenkins Husband, 17530101 ~ 18250321)가 1815년에 지은 멜로디에 100년 정도 지나 가사를 붙였다. 곡은 1902년에 완성되었고 1908년에 악보로 출간되었다. 원래의 가사는 누가 지었는지 알 수 없지만 일부는 캔사스시티의 한 부랑자가 지은 것일 수도 있다. 그의 글은 1897년 감옥에서 발견되었다. 이후 해리를 비롯한 다수 익명의 작가들이 가사를 지은 것으로 추측하고 있다. 해리가 처음 녹음하고 발표했기 때문에 해리가 크레딧을 얻었다.

가사는 봄이 오고 석방되어 집에 왔지만 와이프는 자신을 모른 척하고, 가난하고 직업없이 떠돌아 다녀야 하는 화자의 마음을 풍자적으로 표현하고 있다. 짐 힐(Jim Hill, James Jerome Hill)은 유명한 철도 감독관이다. 해리는 철도노동자였다. 할렐루야(Hallelujah, Alleluia)는 히브리어로 <성경 - 구약>의 유대교 신인 "야훼(Yahweh)를 찬양하라"는 뜻이다. 유대교 계통을 이어받은 기독교(유대교는 기독교를 전혀 인정하지 않는다)에서 기쁨과 감사, 승리 등의 일이 있을 때 최고의 표현 중 하나로 사용하고 있다.
