Washington Square - 빌리지 스톰퍼스 The Village Stompers / 1963

 

Washington Square는 US 뉴욕 재즈 그룹 빌리지 스톰퍼스(The Village Stompers)가 1963년 발표한 인스트루멘탈 곡으로 US 2위, AC 3주간 1위를 기록했다. 싱글 1위는 데일 앤 그레이스(Dale And Grace)의 I'm Leaving It Up To You였고 그 주간은 US 대통령 케네디(John F. Kennedy)가 암살당한 날이 있었다. 그래미 인스트루멘탈 부문 후보에 올랐으나 리즈 오톨라니(Riz Ortolani)의 More가 수상했다.

 

이명세 감독의 1990년 영화 <나의 사랑 나의 신부>에 주제음악으로 사용되었다. 아메스 브라더즈(The Ames Brothers)가 가사를 넣은 보컬 곡을 처음 발표한 뒤 아주 많은 가수들이 커버했고 국내에서는 걸그룹 이시스터즈가 워싱톤 광장으로 번안해 불렀다. 

 

밥 골드스타인(Bobb Goldsteinn)과 데이빗 샤이어(David Shire)가 만들고 조 셔먼(Joe Sherman)이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 민속과 재즈 요소의 조합을 통한 재기발랄한 사운드를 창출했다는 평가를 받았으며 밥은 이 곡의 인기에 대해 다수의 인터뷰에서 "기존의 음악들보다는 단순함을 통해 쉽게 접근할 수 있었던 것 같고요. 당시 퍼져있던 뉴욕 젊은이들의 낙관론과 공동체 의식 덕분"이라고 말했다. 

 

워싱턴 스퀘어는 US 뉴욕 맨해튼 소재로 US 초대 대통령 조지 워싱턴(George Washington) 취임 100주년을 기념하는 아치가 만들어진 후 조성된 공원이다. 워싱턴 스퀘어 파크라 부른다. 롭 라이너(Rob Reiner) 감독의 1989년 영화 <해리가 샐리를 만났을 때(When Harry Met Sally...)>의 로케이션으로 많은 관심을 끌었다. 

 

가사는 전국 각지에서 워싱턴 광장으로 모이자는 내용이다.
