Staring At The Sun – TV On The Radio / 2003

Staring At The Sun은 미국 인디 록 밴드 TV 온 더 라디오(TV On The Radio)가 2003년 발표한 EP <Young Liars>에 수록한 곡이다. 2004년 발표한 정규 앨범 <Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes>에 인트로를 짧게 한 버전을 수록했고 싱글로도 발표했다. 피치포크 선정 2000년대 최고의 노래 41위, NME 같은 부문 75위에 올랐다.

 

팀의 멤버인 데이빗 앤드류 시텍(David Andrew Sitek)과 튠 아데빔프(Tunde Adebimpe)가 만들었고 데이빗이 프로듀서를 맡았고 예 예 예스(Yeah Yeah Yeahs)의 닉 지너(Nick Zinner)와 셀러브레이션(Celebration)의 카트리나 포드(Katrina Ford)가 백업 보컬로 참여했다. 데이빗은 이 곡을 이틀만에 만들었다고 말했다.

 

이 곡의 가사는 페르시아의 시인 잘랄 아드딘 무하마드 루미(جلال‌الدین محمد رومی, 12070930 ~ 12731217)의 시 No Room For Form을 이용해 만들었다. 루미는 이슬f람 소수 종파 중 수피즘의 한 파인 쉬지 않고 계속 빙글빙글 돌며 춤을 추는 메블레비 계파를 창시했다. 인류는 아주 다양한 방법을 통해 신을 만나려고 해왔다. 그것은 그 존재 여부를 떠나서 한편으로는 알렉스 헤일리(Alexander Murray Palmer Haley 19210811 ~ 19920210)가 <뿌리(Roots: The Saga of an American Family)>를 통해 자신의 근원을 찾아가듯이, 연어처럼 거의 본능에 가까운 것일 수도 있지만 한편으로는 바다(현실) 위에서서 태양(신, 구원)을 바라보는, 모두가 공유하는 피로를 이제나저제나 끝낼 수 있을까 하는 소망에 다름이 아닌 것 같다.
