Hello Mr. Monkey - 아라베스크 Arabesque / 1977

 

Hello Mr. Monkey는 저먼 걸그룹 아라베스크(Arabesque)가 1977년 발표한 데뷔곡이다. 이듬해 전 세계적으로 내놓은 앨범 <Friday Night>에 수록했고 1981년 <서울국제 가요제>에 경연팀이 아닌 특별초청으로 내한해 공연하면서 국내에서 크게 히트했다. DJ 김기덕이 진행하는 MBC FM 라디오  <2시의 데이트> 등에 출연한 적이 있다. 왁스가 2001년 머니(Money)란 제목으로 번안해 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

벤 주리스(Ben Juris)와, 베니 룩스(Benny Lux)가 만들고 울프강 메베스(Wolfgang Mewes)가 프로듀서를 맡았다.

 

가사는 과거에 광대로 유명했던 몽키씨가 은퇴 후 소일거리로 동네의 아이들에게 자신의 재주를 보여주며 행복하게 살고 있다는 이야기다. 여전히 빠르고 멋져서 광대 일을 계속하면 좋겠다는 화자의 바람이 들어있다. 아마도 사람에 대한 이야기라기보다는 서커스에서 활동하던 원숭이가 은퇴한 이야기인가 싶다. (은퇴를 바라지 않는) 재능 있는 사람들의 조기 은퇴에 대한 생각을 하게 한다.
