Mashed Potato Time - Dee Dee Sharp / 1962

Mashed Potato Time은 US R&B 뮤지션 디 디 샵(Dee Dee Sharp, Dione LaRue)가 1962년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <It’s Mashed Potato Time>에 수록한 곡으로 US 2위, R&B 1위 등을 기록했고 셔를즈(The Shirelles)의 Soldier Boy에 막혀 1위에 오르지 못했으나 연말결산 3위를 차지해 10위를 차지한 Soldier Boy에 앞섰다.

 

칼 만(Kal Mann Coleman, 19170506 ~ 20011128)과 버니 로우(Bernie Lowe)가 만들고 칼이 프로듀서를 맡았다.칼이 만든 처비 체커(Chubby Checker)의 The Twist처럼 당시 인기가 있었던 매쉬드 포테이토 춤에 대한 노래다. 춤을 추는 배경음악으로 토큰즈(The Tokens)의 The Lion Sleeps Tonight, 마벌렛츠(The Marvelettes)의 Please Mr. Postman, 게리 본즈(Gary Bonds)의 Dear Lady Twist 등을 언급하고 있다.

이 가사에서 언급하는 슬로피 조(Sloppy Joe, Joe Russell)은 US 플로리다에서 전설적인 음식점 Sloppy Joe's의 사장이다. 화자는 이 곳의 음식점에서 나온 으깬감자를 두고 기원을 말하는 것 같다. 하지만 음식이 처음 시작된 곳은 고대 페루로, 이 춤을 처음 춘 것은 R&B 전설 제임스 브라운(James Brown)으로 알려져 있다.
