(We Want) The Same Thing - Belinda Carlisle / 1989

 

(We Want) The Same Thing은 US 뮤지션 벨린다 칼라일(Belinda Carlisle)이 1989년 발표한 3번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Runaway Horses>에 수록한 곡으로 UK 6위, 아일랜드 22위 등을 기록했다.  

 

릭 노웰즈 (Rick Nowels)와 엘렌 쉬플리(Ellen Shipley)가 만들고 릭이 편곡과 프로듀서를 맡았다. 스티브 루카서(Steve Lukather)가 기타를 연주했다. 싱글 버전에서는 "Hey" 부분을 앞에 더 넣었다. 엘렌은 PCC와의 인터뷰에서 "뉴욕 북부에 있는 저희 집 지하에 셋이 모여 함께 만들었습니다. 'we want the same thing'을 먼저 만들고 그것을 후렴으로 확정 지은 뒤에 이것저것 살을 붙였어요. 인간 모두가 같은 것을 원하기 때문에 이 노래는 오늘날에도 여전히 통용된다고 생각합니다. 우린 사랑받기를, 누군가 받아주기를 원하잖아요. 그런게 노래의 시대성을 초월하게 만드는 것이라고 믿습니다. 벨린다는 정말 훌륭한 목소리를 가지고 있어요. 거기에 이 노래를 자신의 것으로 만들고 진심으로 하나가 되었습니다. 그래서 벨린다가 가장 사랑하는 노래 중 하나라고 생각해요"라고 말했다. 

 

릭은 SU와의 인터뷰에서 "벨린다는 최고의 퍼포먼스를 보여주었습니다. 많은 감정을 쏟았기에 사람들이 공감했다고 생각해요. 메시지는 보편적인 주제입니다. 우리 모두는 인생에서 같은 것, 사랑과 행복을 찾는다는 거죠. 그래서 이 노래가 오늘날에도 생명력을 갖고 울림을 주는 것 같습니다"라고 말했다. 

 

가사는 상대를 더 가까이 두기 위해 상대의 마음이 화자의 마음과 같다고 설득하는 내용인 것 같다. 벨린다는 아일랜드타임즈와의 인터뷰에서 "가깝게 지내던 사람과 소통하기 힘들던 경험을 토대로 만들었어요. 그래서 두사람이 동일한 것을 찾고 있음에도 소통하지 못하는 것에 대한 노래라 볼 수 있죠. 이 곡의 메시지가 좋아요. 우리 모두는 인생에 있어 똑같이 행복과 만족을 원하잖아요. 그러니 이 곡의 제목은 진실이예요. 간혹 그걸 이루기 위해 모두가 같은 페이지에 있지는 않아 보이지만요"라고 말했다.
