Let’s Get It Started - Black Eyed Peas / 2004

Let’s Get Started는 블랙 아이드 피스(Black Eyed Peas, 이하 BEP)가 2003년 발표한 3번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Elephunk>에 수록한 곡으로 캐나다 2위, 아일랜드와 영국 11위, 미국 21위, 미국 연말결산 88위 등을 기록했다. 당시 미국 최초로 50만 다운로드를 기록해 CD에서 MP3로 넘어가는 시장 변화에 큰 가능성을 보여주었다. 2005년 그래미 올해의 레코드, 올해의 랩음악, 랩 퍼포먼스 후보에 올라 랩 퍼포먼스 부문을 수상했다.

 

퍼기(Fergie)를 제외한 3명이 만들었고 윌아엠(will.i.am)이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 원래 앨범에 수록했던 제목은 Let’s Get Retarded고 싱글로 내놓았지만 제목이 주는 장애인에 대한 혐오감을 조장하는 용어 때문에, 라디오에서 나오지 않아 히트하지는 않았다. BEP는 1년 뒤 제목을 바꾸고 새로운 버전을 만들어 다시 싱글로 내놓았고 2004년 미국 프로농구 플레이오프에 프로모션으로 활용하면서 크게 인기를 얻었다. 앨범에 보너스 트랙으로 재수록 했고 파티 음악으로 인기가 높아 아주 많은 영화에 사용되었다. 이들의 5번째 앨범인 <The E.N.D.>에는 Let's Get Re-Started란 제목으로 리믹스 버전을 실었다.

 

가사는 이성적으로 생각하지 말고 본능적으로 놀아보자는 의미를 담고 있다. 미국 서해안에서 “let’s get retarded”란 말은 “파티에서 정신을 놓고 미치자”란 의미로 사용하는 말이다. “So when I bust my rhyme, you break ya necks” 부분은 버스타 라임스(Busta Rhymes)의 2001년 곡인 Break Ya Neck을 이용해 만든 말이고 “Step by step like you're infant new kid” 부분은 뉴 키즈 온 더 블록(New Kids On The Block)의 1988년 곡 Step By Step으로 만든 말이다. 해외에서는 전혀 언급이 없지만 에미넴(Eminem)의 2010년 곡인 Love The Way You Lie에서 리한나(Rihanna)의 처음 부분은 퍼기가 맨 처음 부르는 부분을 레퍼런스 한 것으로 보인다.
