Tossin’ And Turnin’ - Bobby Lewis / 1961

Tossin' And Turnin'은 미국 록큰롤, R&B 가수 바비 루이스(Bobby Lewis)가 1961년 발표한 곡으로 미국 7주간 1위, 연말결산 1위, 역대 결산 36위(2018년 기준)를 차지했다.

 

릿치 애덤스(Ritchie Adams)와 맬로우 르네(Malou Rene)가 만들었고 조 르네(Joe Rene)가 편곡과 지휘를 맡았다. 바리톤 색소폰은 헤이워드 헨리(Haywood Henry), 베이스는 밥 부쉬넬(Bob Bushnell), 드럼은 스틱스 에반스(Sticks Evans), 기타는 릿치와 에릭 게일(Eric Gale), 피아노는 폴 그리핀(Paul Griffin), 테너 색소폰은 킹 커티스(King Curtis) 등이 연주했다.

 

릿치는 아폴로 극장에서 인상적이었던 바비의 무대를 보고 바비에게 자신이 만든 노래를 불러줬으면 좋겠다고 제안한다. 당시 바비는 여러 차례 레이블과의 계약이 무산된 터라 흔쾌히 거래에 응했다. 릿치는 바비는 맨해튼에 있는 벨톤사를 방문해 릿치가 사인한 계약서를 받아들었다. 그리고 300만장이라는 경이로운 판매고를 올리면서 차트 1위에 등극했다. 안타깝지만 바비의 운은 거기까지였다. 후속타인 One Track Mind가 10위권에 오른 것을 끝으로 바비의 이름은 더 이상 차트에서 볼 수 없었다.

 

가사는 상대에 대한 생각으로 잠을 이루지 못했다는 내용이다. "things weren't right"이란 가사의 흐름으로 봐서 오래전 사건 때문에 잠을 뒤척이는 것 같지는 않고, 당일이나 1~2일 전에 뭔가 오해가 생겨서 빨리 만나야 할 일이 생겼다거나 이별 통보에 대한 자초지종을 빨리 확인하고 싶어서가 아닐까 하는 생각이 든다.
