It’s Been Awhile - Staind / 2001

It’s Been Awhile은 미국 록밴드 스테인드(Staind)가 2001년 발표한 3번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Break The Cycle>에 수록한 곡으로 미국 5위, 영국 15위, 아일랜드 18위, 미국 연말결산 14위 등을 기록했다.

 

보컬을 맡고 있는 애론 루이스(Aaron Lewis)를 비롯한 멤버들이 함께 만들었고 조쉬 아브라함(Josh Abraham)이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 뮤직비디오는 림프 비즈킷(Limp Bizkit)의 프론트맨 프레드 더스트(Fred Durst)가 감독을 맡았고 루이스의 부인 바네사(Vanessa Lewis)가 출연했다.

 

가사에서 화자는 자신의 과거의 삶을 자세히 돌아보고 마약 중독과 망쳐버린 관계에 대해 묘사하고 있다. 많은 걸 기억하지 못하지만 자신을 떠난 연인의 취향은 기억한다는 것으로 봐서 그 상대가 여전히 화자의 정신에 큰 영향을 미치고 있는 게 아닌가 싶다. "everything I can't remember"는 "기억하고 싶지 않다는 표현인 것 같다. 개인적으로는 아버지에 대한 이야기가 나오는 부분이 재밌다. 인간이 환경의 산물인 것은 맞지만 “아버지 탓을 할 수 없다”는 말에서 그 환경을 만드는 것도 인간임을, 구조를 변화시키는 것도 인간임을 말해준다. 불리한 조건을 깨달았으면 그 조건을 탓하는 것에서 벗어나 그 조건을 바꾸기 위해 어떻게 해야 할 것인지를 강구해야 한다. 쓰고 보니 갑자기 24/7 투덜거리기만 하던 한 X소기업 사장이 생각난다.
