Only Human - Jonas Brothers / 2019

 

Only Human은 US 팝록밴드 조나스 브라더즈(Jonas Brothers)가 2019년 발표한 5번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Happiness Begins>에 수록한 곡으로 US 18위, 2019년 연말결산 78위, 2020년 연말결산 77위, 캐나다 18위, 아일랜드 30위, UK 64위 등을 기록했다. US에서만 200만 이상을 팔았고 빌보드 스태프들이 '2019년 최고의 곡들' 중 40위로 선정했다. 

 

쉘백(Shellback, Karl Johan Schuster)과 조나스 3형제가 함께 만들고 쉘백이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 레게 리듬의 컴퓨터 프로그래밍뿐만 아니라 세션을 동원해 섹소폰, 트럼본, 트럼펫, 바순 등 혼섹션이 인상적인 편곡을 했다. 앨범에서 제일 마지막에 만든 곡으로 조나스는 US에서 쉘백은 스웨덴에 머물면서 주로 아이폰의 페이스 타임으로 작업했다. 쉘백의 시간대가 새벽 4시여서 아주 조용히 말했다고 한다. 뮤직비디오는 앤소니 맨들러(Anthony Mandler)가 감독을 맡았고 가사의  "drunk to an '80s groove"에 맞춰 1980년대를 연상시키는 분위기를 연출했다. 

 

앨범의 Rollercoaster에서 "Nights, flying down the 10, nearly 2 a.m. happiness begins"에서와 같이 앨범 제목을 언급하고 있다. 가사는 동물적인 본능을 넘어, 인간만이 마음가짐을 가지고 사랑한다는 내용인 것 같고 춤 을 실제 의미의 춤뿐 아니라 유희 또는 섹스에 대한 상징으로 사용하고 있는 것 같다.
