A Guy Is A Guy는 도리스 데이(Doris Day, 19220403 ~ 20190513)가 1952년 발표한 곡으로 US 4위, 연말결산 17위 등을 기록했다. 여러 가수들이 커버했다. 

 

오스카 브랜드(Oscar Brand)가 만들었고 1719년에 처음 문헌에 기록된 I Went To the Alehouse (A Knave Is a Knave)를 오스카가 기초로 해서 만들었다는 추측이 있다. 파이프 오르간으로 바그너(R. Wanger)의 Treulich Gefuehrt Ziehet Dahin(결혼행진곡), 멘델스존(.J. W. Felix Mendelssohn)의 Wedding March 등을 연주해 넣었다.

 

제목은 전통적인 남성 롤 모델의 특징을 보여주는 남성을 가리키는 말이라고 할 수 있다. 가사는 화자가 친구 혹은 지인에게 자신에게 프로포즈한 남자를 묘사하는 내용이다. 상대의 행동 중심으로 그리다보니 화자는 남자가 하자는 대로 다 하는, 상당히 수동적인 사람으로 느껴지고 소위 ‘남자는 이래야 한다’와 ‘여자는 이래야 한다’는 틀이 사회적 통념으로 자리 잡고 있던 시대상을 느끼게 한다. 이 당시의 전형적인 남성상은 아마도 먼저 구애하고 대쉬하는 스타일을 말하는 것 같은 생각이 든다.
