I Get A Kick Out Of You - 에설 머먼 Ethel Merman / 1934

I Get A Kick Out Of You는 US 배우이자 가수인 에설 머먼(Ethel Merman, Ethel Agnes Zimmermann, 19080116 – 19840215)가 1934년 발표한 곡으로 프랭크 시내트라(Frank Sinatra) 등 아주 많은 가수들이 커버했다. 멜 토르메(Mel Tormé)의 버전은 1996년 그래미 편곡상을 받았고  토니 베넷(Tony Bennett)과 레이디 가가(Lady Gaga)의 버전은 2022년 그래미 레코딩 등 3개 부문 후보에 올랐다. 

 

US 작곡가 콜 포터(Cole Albert Porter, 18910609 – 19641015)가 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 <애니씽 고우즈(Anyting Goes)>를 위해 만든 곡으로 동명의 영화에도 사용되었다. 

 

가사는 그 어떤 것보다도 흠모하는 상대로부터 얻는 즐거움이 가장 크다고 말하는 것 같다. 원래는 비행기 부분이 "I get no kick in a plane / shouldn't care for those nights in the air / That the fair Mrs. Lindbergh goes through /But I get a kick out of you"였으나 곡을 발표하기 전 린드버그의 아기가 납치된 후에는 "I get no kick in a plane flying too high / With some guy in the sky is my idea of nothing to do / Yet I get a kick out of you"로 바꾸었다. 또한 코카인이 문제가 되자 "Some get a kick from cocaine"은 "Some like the perfume from Spain"로 바꾼 버전들이 있다.
