Rocky Mountain High - John Denver / 1972

Rocky Mountain High는 존 덴버(John Denver, 19431231 ~ 19971012)가 1972년 발표한 6번째 스튜디오 앨범의 타이틀곡으로 캐나다 8위, US 9위, 연말결산 29위 등을 기록했다. MWW 선정 ‘100대 서부 노래’ 중의 한 곡에 올랐다.

 

존과 마이크 테일러(Mike Taylor)가 만들고 밀트 오쿤(Milt Okun)이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 존이 콜로라도로 이사 한 후 산에 오르면서 곡을 만들기 시작했다. 존은 한 공연에서 “곡을 완성하는 데 9개월이 걸렸어요”라고 말했다.

 

가사는 27살에 미지의 산을 처음 올라가보고 자신이 다시 태어났다고 느꼈을 정도로 좋았던 산행의 즐거움에 대해 말하고 있다. 하지만 "high"에 대한 표현상의 문제로 이 곡이 마약과 관련된 곡이라는 방송통신윤리 위원회의 해석에 따라 모든 방송에서 금지곡이 되기도 했다. 존은 <Parental Advisory: Music Censorship in America>라는 책과의 인터뷰에서 “그런 조치는 분명히 록키 산맥에 가본 적도 없는 사람들, 달도, 구름도 한 점 없는 밤에 페르세우스 유성같이 경이로운 것을 관찰할 때 느끼는 쾌감, 기쁨을 경험해 본 적도 없는 사람들이 저지른 짓이예요. 그곳에 친구들과 캠핑을 가면 자연이 주는 가장 멋진 별똥별 우주쇼를 볼 수 있어요. 그 사람들은 분명 오역을 한 거예요”라고 말했다. "tear the mountain down"은 당시 있던 록키 산 개발에 반대하는 내용에 관한 것이다.
