Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang / 1979

 

Rapper's Delight은 US 힙합 삼인조 슈거힐 갱(The Sugarhill Gang, 이하 SG)이 1979년 발표한 셀프타이틀 데뷔 앨범에 수록한 곡으로 캐나다 1위, UK 3위, 아일랜드 14위, US 36위 등을 기록했다. 롤링 스톤 선정 ‘역사상 가장 위대한 500곡’에 포함되어 2004년 248위, 2010년 251위에 올랐고 2014년 그래미 명예의 전당에 올랐다.

 

랩 음악 역사상 최초로 US 100위권 진입 곡이다. 상업적인 첫 랩 음반은 팻백 밴드(Fatback Band)가 1979년 여름에 발표한 Kim Tim III (Personality Jock)로 인정받고 있다. 이 곡은 오리지널 비트를 사용했지만 B면이었고 랩 음악이라기 보단 R&B의 색채가 훨씬 더 진해 힙합의 역사에 있어선 이 곡을 더 기념비적인 곡으로 여긴다. 개인적으로 프랭크 코라치(Frank Coraci) 감독의 1998년 영화 <웨딩 싱어(Wedding Singer)>에서 예식장에 참석한 한 할머니(Ellen Dow)가 불렀던 것이 기억난다. 키드 록(Kid Rock)이 1998년 발표한 Bawitdaba에서 샘플링 했다. 

 

SG 멤버들과 실비아 로빈슨(Sylvia Robinson, 19350509 ~ 20110929)이 만들고 실비아가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 10절이나 되는 긴 버전은 14분이나 된다. 당연히 라디오를 위한 6분대와 4분대 싱글 버전이 있다. 후에 협의를 보게 되지만, 무엇보다도 저작권을 지불하지 않은 무단 샘플링을 최초로 사용한 것으로 알려져 있다. 우선, 시크의 Good Times, UK 밴드 러브 디럭스(Love De-Luxe)의 Here Comes That Sound Again, 또한 콜드 러쉬(Cold Rush)의 MC 그랜드마스터 커즈(MC Grandmaster Caz)의 Superman 등을 사용해 만들었다. 

 

Good Times에 맞춰 처음 랩을 한 건 이들이 아니다. 시크의 나일 로저스(Nile Rodgers)는 데보라 해리(Deobrah Harry)의 권유로 1979년 9월 20일과 21일 클래시(The Clash)의 뉴욕 팔라디움 공연을 함께 한다. 거기서 시크가 Good Times를 연주할 때 래퍼 팹 파이브 프레디(Fab Five Freddy)와 다른 래퍼들이 무대 위를 뛰어다니며 프리스타일 랩을 선보였다. 당시엔 샘플링과 드럼머신이 나오기 전이어서 공연을 위해서는 래퍼들을 위해 실연하는 연주자들이 함께 있어야 했다. 몇 주 후 나일은 뉴욕의 한 클럽에서 Good Times의 베이스 라인에 SG의 랩이 나오는 곡을 들었다. 나일은 DJ에게 곡의 출처를 물었고 DJ는 그날 할렘가에서 산 음반이라고 말했다. 스크래치 기술이 들어간 이 곡이 Rapper's Delight의 초기버전이다. 나일과 베이스 라인을 만든 버나드 에드워즈(Bernard Edwards)는 즉각적으로 고소해 저작권자로 인정받았다. 나일은 “처음에는 너무 화가 났지만 지금은 가장 좋아하는 곡 중의 하나예요”라고 말했다. 이 곡의 저작권자는 나일과, 버나드 단 두 명이다. 이 둘 외에 다른 뮤지션들은 그렇게 적극적으로 저작권을 주장하지 않았다. 

랩의 대중적인 확산을 기점으로 봤을 때 이 곡의 발표를 기획한 실비아에게 아주 큰 공이 있다. 당시엔 DJ들이 브레이크비츠를 반복하고 MC들이 라이브로만 지껄였던 랩 음악은 대체로 브롱크스 지역의 소규모 파티에서나 볼 수 있었고 이 장르를 산업적으로 접근하려는 회사도 없었다. 이런 분위기에서 래퍼들 역시 음반을 내려하지 않아 실비아는 이들을 찾아다니며 설득하느라 애를 많이 먹었다. 이 뿐 아니라 실비아는 미래에는 비디오 영상이 효과적일 것이라 생각해 이들의 공연을 MV로 만드는 등 탁월한 사업가적인 기질을 발휘했다. 실비아는 Love Is Strange, Pillow Talk 등을 발표한 유명 뮤지션이다.
