The Rock And Roll Waltz - Kay Starr / 1955

The Rock And Roll Waltz는 케이 스타(Kay Starr, Catherine Laverne Starks 19220721 ~ 20161103)가 1955년 발표한 곡으로 US 6주 1위, 연말결산 10위, 1950년대 결산 55위, UK 1위 등을 기록했다.

 

쇼티 알렌(Shorty Allen)과 로이 알프레드(Roy Alfred)가 만들고 휴고 윈터헐터(Hugh Winterhalter)가 연주를 맡았다. 가사의 주제에 맞게 3박자의 왈츠이면서도 부기우기 스타일의 록 편곡을 하고 있다.

 

당시 록큰롤은 기성세대가 받아들이기에는 파격적이고 비도덕적인 음악이라 젊은이들의 환호와 더불어 비난과 지탄의 대상이었다. 가사는 젊은이들의 음악인 록큰롤에 맞춰 기성세대의 사교 문화에서 중요한 위치를 차지하던 왈츠를 결합해 당시 세대의 이질감을 표현하면서도 융화 하려는 노력을 기울인 것 같다는 생각이 든다.
