Trouble Every Day - Frank Zappa / 1966

 

Trouble Every Day는 US 뮤지션 프랭크 자파(Frank Zappa, 19401221 ~ 19931204)가 1966년 자신의 밴드 머더스 오브 인벤션(The Mothers Of Invention)과 함께 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <Freak Out>에 수록한 곡으로  싱글 Who Are The Brain Police?의 B면 곡으로 사용했다. 팝 매터스 등 다수의 매체에서 최고의 저항가요들 중 한 곡으로 평가받고 있다. 1974년 발표한 라이브 앨범  <Roxy & Elsewhere>에서 곡을 더 확장해 More Trouble Every Day란 제목의 버전을 수록했다. 

 

프랭크가 만들고 톰 윌슨(Tom Wilson)이 프로듀서를 맡았고 레이 콜린스(Ray Collins)가 하모니카를, 로이 에스트라다(Roy Estrada)가 기타론을 연주했다. 프랭크는 1965년 흑인 거주지 L.A의 와츠에서 백인 경찰들의 강압적인 음주 검문에 화가난 흑인들이 집단으로 들고 일어난 와츠 폭동에 영감을 받아 만들었다. 이 사건으로 흑인 34명이 사망하고 천 명이 넘는 흑백인 부상자가 발생했다. 

 

가사는 화자가 와츠폭동을 TV로 보면서 느낀 문제점들을 말하고 있는 것 같다. 프랭크는 1993년 펄스와의 인터뷰에서 이 곡의 긴 생명력에 대해 "아무 것도 변한게 없기 때문이죠. 우리는 아직도 인종적인 증오를 가지고 있지만 그 불안의 원인들을 직면하고 싶어하지 않습니다. 몇 년이나 와츠 폭동을 조사하며 시간을 보냈지만, 아무도 아무것도 하지 않았죠. 연구들과 보고서들을 보면 미국 젊은이들에겐 1960년대 이후에도 전혀 개선되지 않은 어떤 유형의 행동이 있습니다. 미국적인 어리석음. 그건 절대 사라지지 않는 독특한 것이죠. 과학자들은 우주에서 수소가 가장 풍부한 성분이라고 주장하는데요. 저는 어리석음이 가장 풍부한 성분이라고 주장합니다"라고 말했다. 프랭크는 평생 반권위적인 사회를 위해 노력한 뮤지션으로 평가받고 있다.

보도국애들은 TV에 나오는 남자들 앞에서 이런저런 노고를 하겠다고 
And further, they assert that any show they'll interrupt to bring you news

게다가 뉴스를 전하기 어떤 위해 쇼 프로그램도  내보내지 않겠다고 말해 
If it comes up

일이 발생하면 말이지 
They say that if the place blows up, they will be the first to tell

그들은 그곳이 터지면 제일 먼저 말해줄 거래 
Because the boys they got downtown are workin' hard and doin' swell

현장에 간 보도국 애들이 열심히 하고 있기 때문이래 
And if anybody gets the news before it hits the street

현장에 가기전에 누구라도 소식을 알게 된다면 
They say that no one blabs it faster

아무도 더 빠를 수 없을 거래 
Their coverage can't be beat

And if another woman driver gets machine-gunned from her seat
