Turn! Turn! Turn! - Pete Seeger / 1962

Turn! Turn! Turn!은 피트 시거(Pete Seeger)가 1962년 발표한 <The Bitter And The Sweet>에 수록한 곡으로 처음 발표한 것은 US 포크 그룹 라임라이터스(Limeliters)고 1965년 버즈(The Byrds)가 리메이크해 크게 히트했다.

 

피트가 만들었고 가사는 유대인의 경전 <성경 –전도서> 3장의 글을 인용해 만들었다. 피트는 폴 졸로(Paul Zollo)의 1988년 저서 <Songwriters On Songwriting>에서 “전 <성경>을 그렇게 자주 읽진 않아요. 가끔 대충 훑어보고 어떤 때는 어리석음에 놀라고 어떤 때는 지혜에 놀라곤 하죠. 그래서 전 민간 전승된 최고의 책이라고 불러요. 지혜뿐 아니라 인간 역사를 시적으로 추적해볼 수 있는 책이죠. 어느날 저작권 담당자한테 편지를 받았는데 ‘당신이 만든 저항가요를 팔수가 없어요’라고 왔어요. 전 화가 났어요. 그래서 녹음기에다 말했어요. ‘당신이 원하는 종류의 곡을 쓸 수 없으니 딴 데 알아보슈. 다만 지금 보내는 이 곡만 (당신이 원하는 식으로) 만든 그런 곡이요’라고요. 그리고 주머니에서 종이를 꺼내 15분 만에 즉흥적으로 멜로디를 쓴 다음 그에게 보냈어요. 다음 주에 편지가 왔는데 ‘끝내줘요! 제가 원하던 바로 그거예요!’라고 왔어요. 2달 만에 라임라이터스에게 곡이 팔렸고 그 후엔 버즈에게로 갔어요. 전 버즈의 버전이 아주 좋아요. 스틸 기타의 쨍하는 소리가 종소리 같아요”라고 말했다.
