It’s Late - Ricky Nelson / 1959

It’s Late은 US 록큰롤 뮤지션 리키 넬슨(Eric Hilliard Nelson, 19400508~19851231)이 1959년 발표한 3번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Ricky Sings Again>에 수록한 곡으로 UK 3위, US 9위, 연말결산 74위 등을 기록했다. DDD선정 역대 최고의 록큰롤 190위에 올랐다.

 

도시 버넷(Dorsey Burnette)이 만들었고 도시와 지미 해스켈(Jimmie Haskell)이 편곡을 맡았다. 조 새스파이(Joe Sasfy)가 자문을 해주었고 도시의 동생 자니 버넷(Johnny burnette)도 이 곡의 저작권을 가지고 있다. 개인적으로는 엘비스 프레슬리(Elvis Presley)의 Jailhouse Rock을 레퍼런스 한 것처럼 느껴진다.

 

가사는 데이트하다가 귀가 시간이 늦은 어린 연인의 마음을 표현하고 있다. 당시 미국 백인의 데이트 문화는 남자와 여자가 약속을 정하고 남자가 허락을 구한다는 표시로 약속시간에 여자의 집에 가서 부모님의 얼굴을 뵙고 인사를 드린 후 간단한 이야기를 한 후 여자를 데리고 나와 둘이 시간을 보낸 후 정해진 시간까지 집에 다시 데려다 주는 시스템을 준수하는 분위기였다. 화자는 시간을 지키지 못해 여자 친구의 부모님으로부터 혼나는 것은 물론이고 다시는 만나지 말라는 말을 들을 까봐 걱정을 하고 있다.
