Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations / 1968

Build Me Up Buttercup은 UK 소울 밴드 파운데이션즈(The Foundations)가 1968년 발표한 싱글로 캐나다 1위, UK 2위, US 3위, 연말결산 5위 등을 기록했다. 피치포크 선정 ‘최고의 1960년대 음악’ 194위에 올랐다.

바비 패럴리(Bobby Farrelly)와 피터 패럴리(Peter Farrelly) 형제감독의 1998년 영화 <메리에겐 뭔가 특별한 것이 있다(There's Something About Mary)>에 사용되었다. 

마이크 다보(Mike d'Abo)와 토니 맥컬레이(Tony Macaulay)가 만들었고 토니가 프로듀서를, 콜린 영(Colin Young)이 리드 보컬을 맡았다. UK 싱어 송 라이터이자 배우인 데이빗 에섹스(David Essex)에게 먼저 갔으나 제목이 맘에 들지 않는다며 거절했다.

 

상대가 본인에게는 관심이 없어도 본인은 그런 것에 아랑곳하지 않고 상대에게 엄청난 관심을 갖고 있는 화자를 그리고 있다. 심지어 화자는 그 사람이 번번이 자신에게 헛되이 마음고생을 시켜도 상대를 사랑하는 엄청난 지속성을 가지고 있다. “build me up butter”은 낭만적이거나 성적인 방법으로 상대방을 유혹하고서는 후속조치를 취하지 않거나 약속을 깨는 일을 가리키는 말이다. 우리말로는 희망고문쯤 될 것 같다.
