Cherish – The Association / 1966

Cherish는 US 캘리포니아 출신의 팝 그룹 어쏘시에이션(The Association)이 1966년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <And Then... Along Comes The Association>에 수록한 곡으로 미국과 캐나다에서 1위에 올랐고 미국 연말결산 2위를 차지했다. 1971년 데이빗 캐시디(David Cassidy)가 커버해 미국 9위에 올랐다. <글리(Glee)>에서 마돈나(Madonna)의 Cherish와 이 곡을 섞어 부른 적이 있다. 켄 콰피스(Ken Kwapis) 감독의 2009년 영화 <그는 당신에게 반하지 않았다(He‘s Just Not That Into You)>에 사용되었다.

 

곡은 테리 커크먼(Terry Kirkman)이 만들었고 커트 보에쳐(Curt Boettcher)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 테리는 느리게 편곡하고 싶어 했지만 커트가 받아들이지 않았다. 싱글은 당시 라디오에서 3분이 넘는 곡을 좋아하지 않아 뒷부분이 조금 잘려서 편집되었다. 팀의 멤버 짐 예스터(Jim Yester)는 “노래가 고풍스러워요. 하지만 우린 그런 스타일의 음식을 지금 먹기도 하니까요”라고 말했다.

 

테리는 한 시간 반만에 이 곡을 만들고 바로 공연에서 불렀다. 어쏘시에이션에 초기 멤버였다가 자신의 밴드 뉴 크리스티 민스트럴스(New Christy Minstrels)를 만든 마이크 헬런(Whelan)은 이 곡을 너무 좋아해 자신의 팀에서 발표해야 한다고 주장하며 어쏘시에이션보다 먼저 발표하려고 애쓰기도 했다.
