I Wish It Would Rain - The Temptations / 1968

I Wish It Would Rain은 템프테이션즈(The Temptations)가 1968년 발표한 7번째 스튜디오 앨범의 타이틀곡으로 US 4위, R&B 1위 등을 기록했다.

 

노먼 휫필드(Norman Whitfield)와 바렛 스트롱(Barrett Strong)이 작곡하고 로저 펜자베네(Rodger Penzabene, 19440101 ~ 19671231)가 작사, 노먼이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 곡의 구조는 바렛이 거의 다 만들었고 노먼은 효과음과 음향 등에 신경을 많이 썼다. 연주는 훵크 브라더즈(Funk Brothers)가 맡았다.

 

가사는 사랑을 잃어버리고 집에만 있는 게 지겨워 밖에 나가고 싶은데 남자라서 눈물을 보일 수가 없으니 비가 왔으면 좋겠다는 요즘의 시선에서 보면 다소 유치한 내용일 수 있지만 이 가사는 로저의 실제 경험을 다루고 있다. 로저는 자신의 와이프가 다른 남자를 만나 바람피우는 것을 알고 이 곡과 이 곡의 후속곡 I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)를 만들었다. 하지만 자신의 사랑을 멈출 수 없는 걸 알고는 그 고통을 이기지 못해 앨범이 발표되기도 전에 자살했다.
