Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson / 1987

Smooth Criminal은 마이클 잭슨(Michael Jackson)이 1987년 발표한 7번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Bad>에 수록한 곡으로 아일랜드 4위, US 7위, 연말결산 93위, UK 8위 등을 기록했다.

 

마이클이 만들고 마이클과 퀸시 존스(Quincy Jones)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 마이클이 1984년부터 가지고 있던 아이디어를 현실화한 것이다. 경찰 목소리는 엔지니어 브루스 스웨디언(Bruce Swedien)이, 심장소리는 신클레비어 신디사이저를 사용해 만들었다. “Annie”란 이름은 심폐소생술 실습(CPR)에 사용되는 마네킹 “Resusci Anne”에서 가져온 것이다.

 

뮤직비디오는 특수효과 전문가 콜린 치버스(Colin Chivers)가 감독을 맡았고 처음에는 서부극으로 콘티를 짜려 했으나 영화 <대부(Godfather)>를 보고 갱스터로 바꾸었다. 샬라마(Shalamar)의 제프리 다니엘(Jeffrey Daniel)이 안무를 맡았고 마이클과 여러 작품을 같이 한 댄서 빈센트 패터슨(Vincent Paterson)이 참여했다. 마이클의 하얀 의상과 모자는 뮤지컬 코미디 <밴드 웨건(The Band Wagon)>에 출연한 프레드 아스테어(Fred Astaire)>를 트리뷰트 한 것이다. 중력을 거스르는 퍼포먼스가 일품이다. 이는 와이어와 신발에 특수 장치를 사용해 연출한 것이다. 이 기술은 마이클이 창안한 것으로 마이클이 특허를 가지고 있었고 2005년부터 사라졌다. 마이클이 사용하던 모자는 모델 킴 카다시안(Kim Kardashian)이 딸의 선물로 구매했다. 마이클의 화장이 그대로 묻어 있는 이 모자의 가격은 7000만 원정도 인 것으로 알려졌다. 브릿어워즈 MV 부문을 수상했다.

 

가사는 애니가 능란한 범죄자에게 공격당한 것을 묘사하고 있다. 다른 묘사가 없어 많은 상상을 하게 한다. 아웃트로에서 애니에게 괜찮냐고 물을 때 애니는 “I don’t know why baby”라고 말한다. 이를 두고 일부 팬들은 상대가 애인이었을 걸로 추정하기도 한다. "Dag gone it"은 "Damn it"을 순화한 것이다.
