I Know You Got Soul - Eric B & Rakim / 1987

  

I Know You Got Soul은 US 힙합 듀오 에릭 비(Eric B, Eric Barrier)와 라킴(Rakim, William Michael Griffin Jr.)이 1987년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <Paid In Full>에 수록한 곡으로 UK 13위, US R&B 64위, 댄스 39위 등을 기록했다. 1990년대 우리나라에 힙합 음악이 쏟아질 때 많은 영감을 준 곡으로 롤링 스톤 선정 ‘역사상 최고의 힙합’ 50곡‘ 중 23위, ’역사상 가장 위대한 500곡‘ 중 2004년 386위, 2010년 396위에 올랐다.

 

에릭과 라킴이 만들고 프로듀서도 맡았다. 바비 버드(Bobby Byrd)의 1971년 작품인 I Know You Got Soul에서 제목을 따왔고 잭슨 파이브(Jackson 5)의 I Want You Back, 훵카델릭(Funkadelic)의 You'll Like It Too, 실 존슨(Syl Johnson)의 Different Strokes 등을 샘플링 해 만들었다. 라킴은 “에릭이 훵카델릭(Funkadelic)의 You’ll Like It Too를 가져왔어요. 그래서 전 항상 하던 대로 제임스 브라운(James Brown)이 프로듀서를 맡은 바비의 I Know You Got Soul에 맞춰 랩을 했죠. 에릭이 가져온 그 드럼 비트들은 아주 좋았어요. 흥분시켰거든요”라고 말했다. 하지만 이들이 사용한 곡들은 무단으로 사용한 것들이라 이후에 긴 소송에 휘말렸다. 

 

이 곡을 샘플링한 곡은 무려 100곡이 넘는다. 그 중 주요한 곡들을 살펴보면 영국 밴드 마스(M|A|R|R|S)는 이 곡의 아카펠라 버전에서 가져온 가사로 Pump Up The Volume을 만들었고 숀 폴(Sean Paul)은 International Affair에서, 팀발랜드(Timbaland)는 알리야(Aaliyah)의 Try Again에서 버스타 라임즈(Busta Rhymes)는 World Go Round에서, 제이-지(Jay-Z)는 Can't Knock The Hustle에서 각각 사용했다. 

가사는 랩에 있어서 자신과 상대해 봐야 소용없다는 스웩의 느낌을 담고 있다.
