Unstoppable - Sia / 2016

Unstoppable은 오스트레일리아 뮤지션 시아(Sia, Sia Kate Isobelle Furler)가 2016년 발표한 7번째 스튜디오 앨범 <This Is Acting>에 수록한 곡으로 발표할 당시에는 러시아에서만 폭발적인 인기를 누렸고 이후 틱톡과 유튜브쇼츠의 배경에 깔리면서 다시 수요가 급증해 2022년 싱글로 내놓았고 US 28위, 캐나다 31위 등 세계 각국에서 차트에 올랐다. 삼성 갤럭시 S22 광고에 사용되었고 그로 인해 처음으로 US Top 100에 진입했다. 

 

시아와 크리스토퍼 브레이드(Christopher Braide)가 만들고 제시 샛킨(Jesse Shatkin)이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 시아는 2016년 브라질 올림픽을 위해 리믹스 버전을 녹음했다. 브라질 마칭 밴드 올로둠(Olodum), US 래퍼 푸샤티(Pusha T)가 참여했고 아리엘 레흐샤이드(Ariel Rechtshaid)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 

 

가사는 후렴만 보면 올림픽이나 월드컵 등에서 위용을 뽐내는 전사들의 패배하지 않을 자신감에 관한 곡이라고도 볼 수 있겠지만 소절을 뜯어보면, 이 상황을 멈추지 않고 그냥 쭉 밀고 나가겠다는 내용으로도 볼 수 있을 것 같다. 화자는 선글래스를 끼고 자신의 눈물을 감춘 채 상대가 원하는 말을 하는 사람이다. 이건 이 곡이 담긴 앨범의 제목 '이건 연기하는 중(this is acting)'과도 연결이 된다. 그래서 후렴에 가면 두 방향으로 해석이 가능한 것 같다. 하나는 본래의 자신을 모습을 되찾겠다고 포효하는 것이고 다른 하나는 본래 자신의 모습이 아닌 걸 연기해야 하는 상황을 받아들이고 끝까지 보여주겠다는 것이다. 후자의 해석에 무게를 두자면, 화자는 이전에는 자신의 모습을 숨기지 못해 실패했던 경험이 다수 있었던 것으로 보인다. 그래서 이제는 갑옷인 선글래스를 끼고(아마도 현실에선 시아의 가발 같은 역할) 절대 도중에 포기하지 않고 끝까지 자신을 숨기고 연기할 수 있고 그걸 아무도 막을 수 없다고 말한다. 그러니까 이 가사의 내용은, 자신을 너무 많이 보여줘도 매력이 없는 것처럼, 과거에 자신이 가진 카드의 모든 패를 다 보여주고 시작했던 플레이어의 그러지 않겠다는 새로운 다짐 같은 게 아닐까.
