Mairzy Doats - The Merry Macs / 1944

 

Mairzy Doats는 US 혼성 팝보컬 하모니 그룹 메리 맥스(The Merry Macs)가 1944년 발표한 노벨티 곡으로 당시 45만장의 판매고를 올리며 US 1위를 기록했다.  

 

밀튼 드레이크(Milton Drake), 알 호프만(Al Hoffman), 제리 리빙스턴(Jerry Livingston) 등이 만들고 알 트레이스 앤 히즈 실리 심포니스츠(Al Trace & His Silly Symphonists)가 처음 녹음했다. 듀크대의 <American Speech, 1995 Winter>에 따르면 밀튼은 자신의 4살 딸아이가 밖에서 놀다 들어와 UK 동요 "Cowzy tweet and sowzy tweet and liddle sharksy doisters"라고 부르는 걸 듣고 이 곡을 만들었다고 말했다. 밀튼은 이걸 토대로 새로운 동요를 만들어 동료들에게 들려주었지만 모두들 바보같은 노래라고 생각하며 외면했고 트레이스에게 들려 주었을 때에야 반응이 있었다. 트레이스는 이 곡을 너무나 좋아해 즉시 녹음했고 많은 인기를 얻었다. 

 

가사는 몬더그린(Mondegreen - 특정한 발음이 다른 발음처럼 들리는 현상) 같은 기교를 이용해 만든 노래인 것 같다. 의미없는 말을 빠르게 해 의미가 있게 들리는 효과를 내게 하거나 혹은 원래 의미가 있었으나 빠르게 하고 말의 간격을 다르게 해 의미를 파괴한 후 다시 그 의미를 복원한 경우일 수도 있다.
