Monday, Monday – The Mamas & The Papas / 1966

Monday, Monday는 마마스 & 파파스(The Mamas & The Papas)가 1966년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears>에 수록된 곡으로 US 1위에 올랐다. US에서 제목에 요일이 들어간 노래로서는 처음으로, 또한 남성 둘, 여성 둘로 이루어진 혼성 그룹으로서는 최초로 1위에 올랐다. 1967년 그래미 팝 그룹 보컬 퍼포먼스 부문을 수상했다.

 

팀의 리더 존 필립스(John Phillips)가 만들고 루 애들러(Lou Adler)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 존은 인터뷰에서 “20분 만에 만들었어요”라고 말했고 리드 보컬을 맡은 데니 도허티(Denny Doherty)는 “이 곡을 녹음할 때 우린 그저 그런 노래로 생각했어요. 아무도 월요일을 좋아하지 않으니까요. 전 ‘아 노동자에 대한 얘기구나’라고 생각하며 노래했어요. 제가 보기엔 그 외엔 다른 게 두드러진 게 없었거든요. 그냥 한 주의 한 요일을 노래한 바보 같은 노래라고 여겼죠. 마마 캐스(Mama Cass)와 미셸 필립스(Michelle Phillips)도 이 곡을 좋아하지 않았고 존도 노래가 무슨 의미인지 모르겠다고 말했어요. 그래서 이 노래가 엄청나게 인기를 얻었을 때 우린 다들 경악을 금치 못했어요”라고 말했다.

 

이 곡 바로 전 1위 곡이 영 래스컬즈(Young Rascals)의 Good Lovin’이다. Good Lovin'은 Monday, Monday와 마찬가지로 마지막 부분에 끝난 줄 알았는데 잠시 쉬었다가 다시 시작되는 ‘a false ending’으로 끝난다. 이 곡은 코다 부분에서 멈추었다가 반음을 올려 반복한다. 당시에는 반전 비슷한 신선한 시도로 여겼던 것 같다. 

프린스(Prince)의 1982년 곡인 1999에 영향을 준 것으로 평가받고 있다.
