Roadrunner - The Modern Lovers / 1976

 

Roadrunner는 모던 러버스(The Modern Lovers)가 1976년 발표한 셀프타이틀 데뷔 앨범에 수록한 곡으로 UK 11위를 기록했다. 롤링 스톤 선정 '역사상 가장 위대한 500곡' 중 2004년 269위, 2010년 273위를 차지했다.

조나단 리치먼(Jonathan Richman)이 만들고 1972년 벨벳 언더그라운드(Velvet Underground, 이하 VU)의 프로듀서를 맡았던 존 케일(John Cale)이 프로듀서를 맡았다.  10대에 여러 차례 VU의 공연을 즐겨보았던 조나단은 루 리드(Rou Reed)의 방탕하고 퇴폐적인 Sister Ray를 변형시켜 D, A, 두 개의 코드와 약간 쓰인 E 코드만으로 이 곡을 만들었다. 장소는 조나단의 아버지의 차였다. 모던 러버스의 초창기 멤버 존 펠리스(John Felice)는 “조나단과 나는 차를 타고 128번 국도와 유료도로까지 달리곤 했어요. 언덕 위까지 올라가면 조나단은 라디오 탑과 타오르는 봉화를 감상하며 다른 사람들이 보지 못했던 아름다움을 발견하곤 했죠”라고 회상했다.

이 당시 모던 러버스 멤버는 보컬과 기타에 조나단, 키보드에 제리 해리슨(Jerry Harrison), 베이스에 어니 브룩스(Ernie Brooks), 드럼에 데이빗 로빈슨(David Robinson)이 참여하고 있었다. 제리는 후에 토킹 헤즈(Talking Heads)로, 데이빗은 카스(The Cars)의 멤버로 더 유명해졌다.

루의 가사와 달리 조나단의 것은 열정적이고 솔직하며 밤에 라디오를 켜놓고 혼자 운전하는 화자의 자유를 노래하고 있다. 특히 매사추세츠, 보스톤이 지닌 현대적 교외 분위기와 아름다움을 묘사해 상당히 세련된 느낌을 준다.
