Can't Hold Us Down은 크리스티나 아길레라(Christina Aguilera)가 2003년 발표한 4번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Stripped>에 수록한 곡으로 아일랜드 5위, UK 6위, US 12위, 연말결산 67위 등을 기록했다. 그래미 컬래버레이션 부문 후보에 올랐으나 스팅(Sting)과 메리 제이 블라이즈(Mary J Blige)의 Whenever I Say Your Name이 받았다. 업타운(Uptown)이 2007년 발표한 My Style은 이 곡을 레퍼런스 한 것으로 보인다.

 

크리스티나와 게스트로 참여한 릴 킴(Lil’ Kim), 스캇 스토치(Scott Storch), 매트 모리스(Matt Morris) 등이 만들고 스캇이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 원래 이브(Eve)가 참여하기로 했으나 릴로 바뀌었다. 릴은 크리스티나와 Lady Marmalade에서 함께 한 적이 있고 당시 스캇의 애인이었다. 이브는 하차에 대해 “사람의 마음과 생각은 바뀌잖아요”라고 말했다.

뮤직비디오는 데이빗 라차펠(David LaChapelle)이 감독을 맡았고 뉴욕 동부의 LES 지역의 문화에 영감을 얻어 만들었다.

 

가사는 남성이 많은 여자와 섹스를 하면 능력이 있는 거고 여성이 반대의 입장이면 창녀로 취급받는 등, 남성과 여성에 대한 사회의 이중 잣대, 여성은 가만히 앉아서 자신의 의견을 드높여 말하지 못하는 문화에 대해 부당함을 표현하며 여성들의 연대를 다독이는 메시지를 내보인다. 많은 US 매체들은 "It's sad you only get your fame through controversy"와 "Must talk so big to make up for smaller things" 부분에 대해 에미넴(Eminem)이 Off The Wall과 The Real Slim Shady에서 크리스티나를 언급한 것에 대한 크리스티나의 답변이라고 말했다. 크리스티나는 2018년 피플과의 인터뷰에서 “당시 그의 노래에 많은 상처를 받았어요. 저도 어린 나이에 이런 곡을 발표했으니 훌륭하죠. 지금은 확실히 상황이 많이 바뀌었어요. 우리는 천천히 그러나 확실히 모퉁이를 돌고 있어요. 예전으로 돌아가지 않고요”라고 말했다.
